How to Become a Licensed General Contractor

Most professionals follow this structured path to meet the rigorous Florida general contractor license requirements.

1

Education & Hands-On Experience

If you’re wondering how to become a building contractor with the goal of getting your Florida contractor license, the first step is gaining a solid foundation of theoretical knowledge and hands-on training in the trades. Eligibility requirements for aspiring licensed contractors include being 18 years old and having at least 4 years of proven experience.

At Skilled Trades USA, our Intro to Home Renovation program is designed specifically for those who want to lead. In just 12 weeks, you move beyond theory into a shop-intensive environment, learning the basics of carpentry, electrical, plumbing, drywall, HVAC, and safety procedures. By collectively building a structure to completion, you gain the practical knowledge of how various trades intersect, an essential skill for any future project manager or business owner.

A construction pre-apprenticeship course sets students up for success on the job site, ensuring they contribute meaningfully on day one.

2

Gain Proven Field Experience

After graduation, you must begin accruing at least four years of proven experience. This stage is where you apply your Skilled Trades USA training to real-world jobsites. Most graduates begin in hands-on positions that build foundational experience before moving into leadership roles. Common starting positions include:

  • Construction laborer

  • Carpenter’s assistant or framing crew member

  • Renovation technician or home renovation assistant

  • Drywall, flooring, or finishing crew member

  • General construction helper working across multiple trades

These roles allow you to develop practical skills, understand jobsite workflows, and gain exposure to different trades. Focus on working for a certified building contractor to learn the complexities of building codes, site safety, and subcontractor management across larger projects.

3

Demonstrate Leadership as a Foreman

The Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation (DBPR) requires that at least one of your four years of experience be in a supervisory role.

As a foreman or lead, you transition from performing labor to managing a job site. You will be responsible for interpreting blueprints, coordinating schedules, and ensuring the quality of work meets Florida's rigorous standards. This phase is critical for developing the "big picture" perspective needed to pass the Florida state construction exams and run a successful company.
